The information given below about the physiological response should be used in conjunction with Handout I. It is important to encourage clients to identify their own physiological responses. Individuals' symptoms may differ, but their identification will help act as a warning signal to prompt the use of behavioural coping strategies. Learning to recognize physiological responses to anger helps clients to understand the importance of behavioural techniques to reduce such arousal. Clients will be taught techniques to use both during anger-arousing situations and in order to reduce their daily levels of tension.
As coursework, clients are provided with Worksheet II and encouraged to complete each section for the next session, using information gained from Handout IV and personal reflection. The coping strategies generated will be incorporated into clients' relapse prevention plans (see Session Eleven).
