In particular, he was interested in the relationship between the internationalist ideals of the revolutionary movement and its nationalist claims – one of the crucial questions of 1848. ’4 The review of Valentin's work as historian draws our attention to two aspects. First, Valentin's biography exemplifies the political meaning of histories and memories of 1848 during the late Kaiserreich, the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazi Germany. Second, Valentin emphasizes the relationship between the changing concept of nationality as part of the experience of 1848 and the internationalist ideals of the revolutionary movement.
